For the
first time in Israel: Ben-Gurion University of the Negev has established
a unique center for social and emotional support for cancer patients and
their families
The Center is called Ma'agan and is located in Beer-Sheva,
so that cancer patients their families and friends can join together for
social and emotional support, in addition to the medical treatment.
The center offers support, workshops, lectures, and
social events. The activities are provided at no cost, in a homely
atmosphere.
The center offers special programs aimed at meeting the
needs of children, adolescents and adults, guided by specialists. Art
workshops, bibliyotherapy, exercise programs, nutrition lessons and
dancing lessons in addition to lectures given by specialists on topics
concerning the Ma'agan members. For adolescents support in school work,
a music room, an information center and library are available.
Ma'agan Center is unique in Israel, and was established
through the generous support of Solomon and Edith Friedman of New York,
United States, through the Poliar Foundation in memory of Edith Salomon
parents.
The faculty of Health Science has founded the center in
concurrence with its vision for community outreach and involvement.
Partners in the project include the Israeli Cancer Association and the
Municipality of Beer-Sheva.
